How does American Legion help the community?
Nationally: Emergency financial assistance, Lobbies congress, scholarships, Volunteers, Baseball, Help Veterans, Scouts
Locally: Host the biggest fishing derby, Walk a-thon, Parade, Donations to Prudence Crandall, Quigley Park
Contributions to Veterans Strong, monthly blood drives at Doubletree, Family dinners, activities to nursing homes, supplies to active duty troops overseas, Bingo, assist Gloria Dei with the food drive, Read Across America, Recycle bikes - bring them to Bikers Edge, part of Mum festival, member of Chambers of Commerce, an ally of Bristol Press, Fisher House program at West Haven, VA
Established in 1919 - For veterans who have served during wartime. Did not include peacetime in the beginning. Now only need to serve one day.
90 Members, 10% show up to meetings
Some live in nursing homes, some are housebound, some are deployed, and some are first responders
Would like to get together and support each other!
Can be son or daughter of a Veteran to join the side groups
Meet 3rd Monday of the month, executive board meets the prior Thursday
